Retirement savings
you can hold.
Winfield Scott Metals helps investors move all or part of an existing IRA or 401(k) into physical gold, silver or platinum — held in your name at an IRS-approved depository. No penalties. No taxable event.
Serving investors nationwide from Atlanta, Georgia
Held in your name
Metals are titled to your IRA — not pooled, not lent out.
IRS-approved storage
Fully insured depository vaults with annual audits.
Tax position unchanged
A direct transfer keeps the account's existing tax treatment.
A different kind of asset
in the same account.
Most retirement accounts hold a single category of risk: paper assets that rise and fall together. Physical metals behave differently, and the IRS has permitted them inside a self-directed IRA since 1997.
It is not a promise from anyone
Gold and silver carry no counterparty risk. Their value does not depend on an issuer staying solvent or a government honoring a commitment.
It moves on its own terms
Metals have historically held value during periods when equities and bonds fell together, which is when diversification matters most.
You can take delivery
At the point of distribution you may take the metal itself rather than cash, subject to the usual IRA distribution rules.
Four steps, and we
handle the paperwork.
A rollover moves funds directly between custodians. Because the money never passes through your hands, it is not a distribution and nothing is withheld.
Open the self-directed account
We introduce you to a qualified custodian and prepare the application with you. It takes about fifteen minutes.
Fund it from your existing plan
Your current provider transfers the amount you choose. You can move part of an account and leave the rest where it is.
Choose your metals
We walk through the IRS-eligible coins and bars, what each is suited to, and what the spread and premiums actually are before you decide.
Metals ship to the depository
Your holdings are stored insured and audited, and you receive statements showing exactly what is held in your name. We work with Delaware Depository in Wilmington, DE and IDS of Delaware in New Castle, DE.
We would rather you understood the trade-offs.
Winfield Scott Metals is a precious metals firm based in Atlanta, Georgia. We specialize in self-directed retirement accounts, and we work with a small number of clients at a time so that conversations are unhurried.
The firm is led by Todd Young, who started his career one week before the 1987 Black Monday crash. Over thirty-five years he has worked through the dot-com collapse and the 2008 financial crisis, stood on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange the day George Soros broke the Bank of England, traded his own account, and managed accounts for institutions.
For the past decade-plus his work has focused on physical precious metals for accredited investors — research and analysis on allocation, not discretionary management. He holds a degree in econometrics and game theory from New York University.
"If metals are not right for your situation, we will say so."
Plain pricing
You see the premium over spot, the custodian fee and the storage cost in writing before anything is committed.
No pressure calls
You will speak with one advisor, not a rotating floor.
Support after the purchase
Account questions, additional contributions and eventual distributions are handled by the same person who set it up.
Answers before the call.
Will I be taxed or penalized for moving funds?
A direct custodian-to-custodian transfer is not a distribution, so there is no tax and no early withdrawal penalty. Your advisor and tax professional should confirm how this applies to your particular account.
Can I keep the metals at home?
No. Metals held inside an IRA must be kept with an approved trustee or depository. Storing IRA metal at home risks the account being treated as distributed.
Which coins and bars qualify?
The IRS sets minimum fineness standards and approves specific products, including American Eagles and certain bullion bars from accredited refiners. Collectibles and most numismatic coins do not qualify.
Do I have to move my whole retirement account?
No. Many clients move a portion and leave the balance invested as it is. There is no requirement to convert the full amount.
What does it cost?
There are three components: the premium over the spot price on the metal itself, an annual custodian fee, and an annual storage and insurance fee. We put all three in writing before you decide.
How do I get my money out later?
You can sell the metal back and take cash, or take physical delivery of the metal itself. Both follow the standard IRA distribution rules for your age and account type.
Start with a conversation, not a commitment.
Book a call at a time that suits you, or simply pick up the phone. Either way there is no obligation and no follow-up you have not asked for.
